The Italian Football Federation has reportedly identified Pep Guardiola as its top choice to become the next head coach of the Italy national team, with preparations already underway for the UEFA Euro 2028 cycle.
According to Sky Italia, an initial meeting took place in Barcelona last weekend involving Guardiola, newly appointed Italy technical director Paolo Maldini, and Leonardo, who is also part of the federation's technical project. The discussions focused on the possibility of the Spanish manager leading the Azzurri into a new era.
Guardiola is currently without a club after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season. Although the 55-year-old recently stated that he was enjoying a period away from coaching, Italy's proposal could persuade him to return to the dugout.
The Spaniard has a long-standing connection with Italian football, having played for both Brescia and Roma following his departure from Barcelona. His experience and tactical reputation make him the federation's preferred candidate as Italy seeks to rebuild after a difficult period on the international stage.
The four-time world champions have failed to qualify for the last three FIFA World Cups and were eliminated in the group stage in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments. The federation believes Guardiola could restore Italy to the top level of international football.
While Guardiola remains the priority, former Italy manager Roberto Mancini and ex-midfielder Andrea Pirlo are also reportedly being considered if negotiations with the Spanish coach do not lead to an agreement.
