Discover Card Customers: 5 Things to Do Before Your Account Moves to Capital One

Millions of Discover credit card customers will soon see their accounts transferred to Capital One as part of the companies' $35 billion merger, with migrations taking place in phases throughout 2026 and early 2027.

Some cardholders have already been notified that their transition will begin on 27 July, although Capital One says account migrations will occur in waves.

While the Discover brand will remain, customer accounts will be managed through Capital One's systems, meaning cardholders will eventually use the Capital One website and mobile app instead of Discover's online services.

The good news is that customers will keep their existing credit cards, account numbers, annual fees, APRs, credit limits and rewards programmes, with most core features remaining unchanged.

Here are five important steps Discover customers should take before the transition.

1. Download the Capital One App

Once your account is migrated, you'll manage it through the Capital One app and website rather than Discover's platform.

Although customers cannot log in until their migration is complete, downloading the app in advance can make the transition smoother.

Capital One also recommends ensuring your email address, phone number and mailing address are up to date in your Discover account, as this information will transfer automatically.

2. Check Your Payment Due Date

Most payment due dates will remain unchanged, but some customers may receive a new payment date to avoid technical issues during the migration.

Capital One says any changes will only extend payment deadlines rather than move them earlier.

Customers using automatic payments (AutoPay) should verify that their payment settings transfer correctly after migration.

Importantly, Capital One says the transition will not affect customers' credit scores, and migrated accounts will continue showing their original opening dates on credit reports.

3. Prepare for Feature Changes

Some Discover features will disappear after accounts move to Capital One.

Among the changes:

  • Rewards can no longer be used to satisfy the minimum payment due.
  • Gift card redemptions will require a minimum value of $25, up from Discover's previous $5 minimum.
  • Apple Pay's "Pay with Rewards" feature will no longer be available.
  • Some recurring Apple Pay subscriptions may need to be updated.

4. Explore New Capital One Benefits

Cardholders will gain access to several additional services, including:

  • Capital One Travel, offering rewards on eligible hotel and rental car bookings.
  • Capital One Entertainment, providing access to concerts, sporting events and exclusive experiences.
  • Capital One Offers, featuring cashback shopping promotions.
  • CreditWise, Capital One's free credit monitoring service.

Customers will also benefit from virtual card numbers and additional spending management tools.

5. Watch for New Cards for Authorised Users

Primary cardholders will keep their existing cards.

However, authorised users and joint account holders will receive new physical cards with unique card numbers, replacing Discover's previous system where multiple users shared the same account number.

The new cards will be mailed to the primary account holder, after which authorised users can create their own Capital One online accounts.

What Stays the Same

Despite the platform change, most customers will notice little difference in the core features of their accounts.

Capital One says Discover cardholders will retain:

  • Existing card numbers
  • Credit limits
  • Annual Percentage Rates (APRs)
  • $0 annual fees (where applicable)
  • Rewards earning rates
  • Most redemption options

The migration represents the next major step in Capital One's integration of Discover following the acquisition completed in May 2025.
