Benfica Miss Out on Portuguese Wonderkid Mezian Mesloub Soares

Benfica have missed the opportunity to sign highly rated Portuguese youngster Mezian Mesloub Soares, with the 16-year-old forward opting to sign his first professional contract with French side Lens.

According to French newspaper L'Équipe, Benfica showed strong interest in the teenage sensation and attempted to convince him to move to Portugal. However, Lens won the race to secure his long-term future despite competition from both Benfica and Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

Born in France but holding Portuguese nationality, Mesloub Soares has represented Portugal at both Under-16 and Under-17 level and is regarded as one of the country's brightest young prospects.

The talented attacker made headlines last season when he scored the winning goal in Lens' 1-0 Ligue 1 victory over Nantes just seconds after coming off the bench. He achieved the feat at only 16 years of age before signing his first professional contract with the French club two months later.

His impressive breakthrough has made him one of the most exciting young players in French football, with several European clubs monitoring his development. By keeping Mesloub Soares, Lens have secured one of their most promising academy graduates as interest from abroad continues to grow.
