Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially announced the appointment of Portuguese coach César Peixoto as their new head coach, marking the first international experience of his managerial career.
The 46-year-old leaves Gil Vicente after a successful spell in Portuguese football and has signed a two-year contract with the English club. Wolverhampton will compete in the EFL Championship next season and have entrusted Peixoto with the mission of leading the club back to the Premier League.
Although the financial details of the agreement have not been officially disclosed, reports indicate that Wolverhampton will pay approximately €1 million to Gil Vicente to secure the services of the Portuguese manager.
Peixoto arrives in England after managerial spells with Varzim, Académica, Chaves, Moreirense, Paços de Ferreira, and Gil Vicente, steadily building a reputation as one of the most promising coaches in Portuguese football.
Speaking after his appointment, the new Wolves boss expressed his excitement and ambition for the project.
"It is a great feeling. I am proud to be here at this historic club. This is a huge opportunity, and I am ready to do everything possible to take Wolves back to where they belong, in the Premier League," Peixoto said.
The Portuguese coach emphasized his desire to implement a clear footballing identity based on passion, intensity, and attacking football, reflecting the spirit of the club and its supporters.
"We have good players, but I believe the team can improve significantly. I want to build a strong identity, help the club grow, and make the team play with energy, passion, and ambition. It is important that the supporters see themselves reflected in the way we play," he added.
Peixoto also revealed the influence that legendary Portuguese coaches José Mourinho and Jorge Jesus have had on his career.
"I learned something from every coach I worked with. Mourinho was very important to me during my time at Porto, while Jorge Jesus taught me a lot about attacking football and aggressive game management. However, I have my own ideas, my own identity, and that is what I want to bring to Wolves."
Meanwhile, Gil Vicente is already working on a replacement. Reports suggest that Luís Pinto, formerly of Vitória de Guimarães, is the leading candidate to take over in Barcelos, with negotiations reportedly entering their final stages.
For César Peixoto, the move represents the biggest challenge of his coaching career and an opportunity to prove himself in one of the world's most competitive football environments while attempting to guide Wolverhampton back to the Premier League.
