New Benfica head coach Marco Silva was always destined for a career in management, according to former teammate João Coimbra, who has shared a remarkable story from their days together at Estoril Praia.
Silva began his coaching journey at Estoril in 2011 and quickly established himself as one of Portugal’s most promising managers, leading the club to promotion from the second division before securing fourth and fifth-place finishes in the Primeira Liga.
Speaking about Silva's early passion for coaching, João Coimbra revealed that the current Benfica boss already possessed a tactical mindset while still playing professionally.
“At 28 years old, he had already completed the second level of his coaching course. We could all see that he understood football differently. He already had the coach’s mentality,” Coimbra explained.
One particular incident convinced everyone that Silva's future would be on the touchline. During a trip to northern Portugal in 2010, then-Estoril coach Neca asked Silva, who was unavailable to play, to scout an upcoming opponent, Gil Vicente.
According to Coimbra, Silva returned with such a detailed and comprehensive report that the coach was left astonished.
“Neca went crazy when he saw the report Marco prepared. That was when everyone realized he had something special as a future coach,” Coimbra recalled.
After retiring, Silva briefly served as sporting director before taking charge of Estoril's first team. Coimbra believes that success was no coincidence, as Silva had already played a key role in recruiting many of the players who would later help the club win promotion and establish itself in the top flight.
The former Benfica midfielder praised Silva’s tactical intelligence, calm personality, and ability to connect with players. According to Coimbra, one of Silva’s greatest strengths is his capacity to improve footballers both on and off the ball while maintaining a strong team spirit.
“He knows exactly what players need. He cares about everyone, including those who are not playing. He motivates players extremely well, and very few can say anything negative about him,” Coimbra said.
The former teammate also highlighted Silva’s work with technically gifted players, pointing to Brazilian midfielder Carlos Eduardo as an example of a player whose defensive contribution improved significantly under the coach’s guidance.
After spending a decade abroad and earning widespread recognition with clubs including Fulham FC in the Premier League, Silva now returns to Portuguese football with Benfica.
Coimbra believes the appointment is exactly what Benfica needed following the departure of José Mourinho, describing Silva as “the right choice” to lead the club into a new era.
He expects the 48-year-old to bring attacking football, strong leadership, and renewed ambition to the Estádio da Luz, adding that Silva would only have accepted the challenge after receiving the guarantees necessary to build a competitive project capable of winning trophies.
