Millions of Americans are set to receive their monthly Social Security benefits this week as the Social Security Administration (SSA) continues its regular June payment schedule.
The next round of payments is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, and will be sent to beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 11th and 20th day of any month.
Social Security benefits, which are primarily paid to retirees and older Americans, are generally distributed on Wednesdays according to a staggered schedule based on recipients' birth dates.
Under the SSA payment calendar, beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month typically receive their payments on the second Wednesday of each month. Those born between the 11th and 20th receive payments on the third Wednesday, while recipients born after the 20th are paid on the fourth Wednesday.
Special payment rules apply to certain beneficiaries. Individuals who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 generally receive their payments on the third day of each month, unless that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
Meanwhile, recipients who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) typically receive their SSI payment on the first day of the month and their Social Security benefit on the third day of the month.
The payment schedule comes as Social Security continues to face long-term financial challenges. Current projections indicate that the program's trust funds could face a funding shortfall as early as 2032. Without legislative action from Congress, experts estimate that beneficiaries could eventually face significant reductions in monthly payments.
Several policy groups and research organizations have proposed reforms to strengthen the program's finances, including adjustments to benefits, taxes, and eligibility rules. However, no major changes have yet been enacted.
For now, eligible beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th can expect their June Social Security payment to arrive on Wednesday, June 17, according to the SSA's established schedule.
