Sporting Set Loan Plan for Rafael Nel Amid Ioannidis Fitness Doubts

Sporting CP is already shaping its squad for 2026/27, and the future of Rafael Nel has become one of the main topics at Alvalade. The 21-year-old striker impressed after stepping up from the B team, showing efficiency and maturity beyond expectations.

The club’s initial plan is clear: a loan move within Portugal’s top flight to guarantee regular playing time and accelerate his development. However, that strategy could change due to uncertainty surrounding Fotis Ioannidis. The Greek forward has been sidelined since February with physical issues, and his recovery will be crucial in shaping decisions.

Head coach Rui Borges wants Nel involved at the start of pre-season and is reluctant to approve a loan before assessing Ioannidis’ condition. If doubts persist, the young striker could remain with the first team as an attacking option.

Nel’s rise has been backed by strong numbers , seven goals and four assists in Liga 2 with the B team, followed by three goals and one assist in limited appearances for the senior side. Beyond statistics, his attitude, work ethic, and adaptability have earned praise from the coaching staff.

For now, the decision remains open. Between a strategic loan and a place in the main squad, Rafael Nel heads into the summer as a player seen not only as a prospect for the future, but already a viable option for the present.
