FC Porto Await Iván Jaime Decision as CF Montréal Loan Clause Nears Critical Point

FC Porto are facing a decisive moment regarding the future of Iván Jaime, with the attacking midfielder’s final two matches for CF Montréal expected to determine whether the Canadian club will be forced to activate the purchase option included in the loan agreement.

According to the deal, Montréal must buy 80% of the player’s rights for €5.5 million if Iván Jaime features in at least 60% of matches during his loan spell while playing more than 45 minutes in those games. At present, the Spaniard meets the requirement exactly, having qualified in 12 of Montréal’s 20 matches since arriving in August.

However, the situation remains uncertain because the MLS side can still avoid triggering the mandatory clause by carefully managing his playing time over the remaining fixtures before the loan expires on June 30. Current indications suggest the club may limit the midfielder’s minutes to prevent the automatic purchase obligation and instead attempt to renegotiate the transfer fee.

From a financial perspective, Porto have already secured €250,000 for the loan plus an additional €50,000 bonus linked to appearances. Beyond that, any permanent transfer would depend on negotiations if the clause is not activated.

Iván Jaime joined Porto from FC Famalicão in a deal worth around €10 million and remains under contract until 2028. Before leaving on loan, he made 44 appearances for the Dragons, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

The midfielder’s salary is also a major factor. Public MLS data reportedly place him as Montréal’s highest-paid player, with a guaranteed annual compensation exceeding $2 million. Combined with injuries suffered earlier this year and inconsistent playing time, the financial burden may encourage the Canadian side to seek a reduced transfer fee.

Frustration has also become visible on the pitch, with the Spanish playmaker reportedly unhappy about repeated substitutions and limited minutes during recent matches.
