Sporting celebrate historic achievement not seen for more than 30 years

Sporting CP made history once again in Portuguese volleyball after being crowned back-to-back national champions for the first time in 33 years. The Lions defeated SL Benfica 3-0 in Game 3 of the Liga Una play-off final, sparking huge celebrations inside a packed João Rocha Arena.

João Coelho’s side completely dominated the series, winning the final without dropping a single set something they had also managed throughout the entire second phase of the competition. Sporting sealed another derby victory with set scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-10.

The triumph secured the club’s eighth national title and allowed Sporting to equal Leixões SC in the all-time list of Portuguese champions. It also marked the first time since the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons that the club achieved consecutive league titles, a period that eventually led to their only three-peat championship run in 1993/94.

Sporting’s domestic campaign was close to perfect. The team suffered just one defeat in all national competitions this season, against Leixões in the opening round of the league. From that point on, the Lions built an impressive winning streak, including seven victories over Benfica during the campaign.

At the top of the Portuguese volleyball champions ranking remains Sporting Clube de Espinho with 18 titles, followed by Técnico (13), Benfica (12), FC Porto (9), and now Sporting and Leixões with eight each.
