SC Braga chasing a dream: “No one had doubts” after Benfica defeat 15 years ago

The journey of SC Braga in the UEFA Europa League reaches a decisive chapter today, with the Minho side carrying a slim 2-1 advantage from the first leg. Despite the narrow margin, belief within the squad remains high ahead of the clash in Freiburg.

Former goalkeeper Artur Moraes, a key figure in Braga’s historic 2010/11 European run, recalled that campaign to inspire the current team as they aim for another final, this time in Istanbul. Back then, Braga also lost the first leg away to Benfica (2-1) before overturning the tie with a 1-0 win at home, sealed by Custódio Castro’s decisive goal.

“The confidence we had came from that first match in Lisbon. Even in defeat, we believed we could do it,” Artur said. “We were a very solid defensive team. From the round of 16 until the final, we didn’t concede at home. We trusted our identity.”

He highlighted the importance of mentality in European knockout football: “We knew we could be successful. We were organised, focused, and strong defensively. That belief carried us all the way.”

Reflecting on the current squad, Artur acknowledged differences between eras but stressed continuity in ambition: “Braga today is different, but the path they’ve had this season is very important. I hope they can reach the final. It would mean a lot for the club and Portuguese football.”

The former goalkeeper also warned about the difficulty of playing in Germany: “It’s always very tough away in Germany. Braga must be very well organised, fully focused, and mentally strong. It won’t be easy, but I’ll be supporting them.”

He concluded by referencing team spirit and resilience, especially in the absence of key players like captain Ricardo Horta: “When you lose an important player, the group has to respond. In strong teams, the collective always steps up.”

Braga, meanwhile, continue their pursuit of a second historic European final, aiming to replicate or even surpass the unforgettable 2010/11 campaign.
