Roger Martínez Slams Colombia Coach After World Cup Snub

Roger Martínez has publicly lashed out at Colombia national team coach Néstor Lorenzo after being left out of the preliminary 55-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 31-year-old striker, currently playing for Al Taawoun FC, took to social media to express his frustration, citing his individual performances this season as justification for inclusion.

“I’m the second-best Colombian scorer , 23 goals in 30 games, still fighting to be the best in the season in a league that includes some of the world’s top players,” Martínez wrote.

The forward then escalated his criticism of the national team coach with a strongly worded remark, later widely reported and partially censored due to its language, accusing Lorenzo of failing to properly evaluate his performances.

Despite the outburst, Martínez’s management later issued a statement attempting to calm tensions, while the player himself also wished success to his national teammates ahead of the tournament.

Martínez, who has 28 caps and four goals for Colombia, last appeared for the national team in October 2024 in a World Cup qualifier against Bolivia.

His career has included spells at Racing Club and Club América, where he gained prominence before moving to the Saudi Pro League.

Colombia will compete in Group K of the 2026 World Cup alongside Portugal national football team, DR Congo national football team, and Uzbekistan national football team, in a highly competitive group stage.
