Sporting CP are close to securing the signing of Rodrigo Zalazar from SC Braga in a deal reportedly worth around €30 million, continuing a long tradition of players moving from Minho to Alvalade.
The transfer is expected to be finalized after the Taça de Portugal final against Clube Desportivo Torreense on May 24, with Zalazar set to become the 12th player in the 21st century to move directly from Braga to Sporting on a permanent deal.
The history of this transfer route has produced mixed outcomes for Sporting, ranging from success stories to underwhelming spells. Notable examples include João Pereira, who arrived in 2010 and became an important squad figure, and Paulinho, signed in 2021, whose contribution divided opinion among supporters.
However, other players who made the same journey experienced less impactful or short-lived spells, particularly during the early 2000s, when several signings failed to fully settle or meet expectations at Alvalade.
Zalazar’s expected arrival adds a new chapter to this long-standing transfer connection between the two clubs, with Sporting hoping the Uruguayan can provide consistent quality in midfield and justify his significant fee.
The 25-year-old has been one of Braga’s standout performers, and his potential move is already being seen as one of the major transfers in Portuguese football ahead of the summer window.
