Hidemasa Morita has been left out of Japan’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Japan national football team confirming its official list this Friday.
The midfielder from Sporting CP had already missed the March training camp and now faces another major setback at international level, as he is again omitted from the tournament squad.
Morita’s absence is one of several notable exclusions, alongside players such as Takumi Minamino, while Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma was also not included due to injury.
The Japanese squad includes several high-profile names such as Takefusa Kubo, Wataru Endo, and Daichi Kamada as they prepare for a group stage featuring the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden.
Morita, who is in the final phase of his contract with Sporting and has been linked with a potential move to the Premier League, had been expected by some to feature in the squad after a strong club season. However, the national team coaching staff ultimately opted for other midfield profiles.
Japan will look to replicate or improve on their previous World Cup campaign, where they topped a group featuring Spain and Germany before being eliminated on penalties in the round of 16 against Croatia.
