Moçambique’s Under-17 national team, known as the Mambinhas, is set to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) U-17, scheduled to take place in Morocco from 13 May to 2 June, with hopes of securing a historic qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Head coach Luís Guerreiro has announced a final squad of 24 players after a selection process that began during the COSAFA tournament and was refined through national championship scouting across the country.
The coach expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, highlighting that the squad is ready both physically and technically for the challenge ahead.
Team captain Diego Pelembe stated that the main objective is clear: to reach the World Cup by performing strongly in the tournament. Vice-captain Steys José also emphasized the team’s motivation and collective work, stressing that results will depend on performance rather than reputation.
Mozambique has been placed in Group C alongside Angola, Tanzania, and Mali.
The competition will see the top two teams from each group qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, raising the stakes for the young Mozambican side as they prepare for a tough continental challenge.
