Kompany slams João Pinheiro: “He tilted the game”

PSG have reached the UEFA Champions League final for the second consecutive season after drawing 1-1 away to Bayern Munich and progressing on a 6-5 aggregate score. However, the match was overshadowed by strong criticism from Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, who openly questioned the performance of referee João Pinheiro.

“I am proud of my players. They fought for every ball, every duel, every moment. But at this level, football is decided by details… and today the details were against us,” Kompany said after the match.

The Belgian coach was particularly upset with several controversial decisions, including a potential second yellow card for Nuno Mendes. “For me, it is very hard to understand how that is not a second yellow card. The whole stadium expected that decision. If the rules are the rules, then they must be applied consistently,” he added.

Kompany also referred to a handball incident involving João Neves, which Bayern believed should have resulted in a penalty. “The ball clearly hits the hand. I am not here to make excuses, but we deserve consistency. In matches like this, one decision can change everything. Bayern deserved that penalty,” he stated.

Without directly accusing the referee of wrongdoing, Kompany still suggested the match was influenced by key decisions: “I will choose my words carefully… but I think my players will leave here very frustrated. Very frustrated. Because they gave everything and did not feel justice in the key moments.”

He added: “I felt there was a small hand in the game that tilted things in the wrong direction for us. That does not take anything away from PSG, but in such balanced matches… if we lose, it should only be because of ourselves.”

Despite the frustration, Kompany ended on a forward-looking note: “This club has a strong mentality. We don’t complain, we respond. But UEFA must also understand: players, coaches, and fans deserve clarity. Today there are too many questions.”
