João Coelho: “Victory built on consistency without euphoria”

Sporting’s volleyball coach João Coelho highlighted consistency as the key factor behind the club’s dominant season, after securing the national championship with a 3-0 victory over Benfica in Game 3 of the final. The Lions completed a flawless playoff run without losing a single set and suffered only one defeat during the regular season, claiming their eighth national title.

“This was a season of consistency that allowed us to finish first. Consistency throughout the entire year, without excessive euphoria and always aware that anything can happen,” said João Coelho after the match.

He also praised Benfica’s effort despite the one-sided final series. “We must also congratulate Benfica, who tried everything with all available players. Many of them are pentacampeões, they did not suddenly become weaker. Two years ago, we already pushed them to a deciding match,” he noted.

Coelho emphasized the strength of his squad and staff: “The team was calm, mature, and always within limits. It is an extraordinary group. They know how to work seriously and also enjoy themselves. The staff is incredible and makes everything function like a family.”

Looking ahead, the Sporting coach stressed the importance of continuity in a volatile sport. “Volleyball has a very unstable market. The project has the ability to convince players to stay. I hope most of them remain. We try to be ambitious and selective, and the goal is to keep our best players and improve further.”

Benfica coach Marcel Matz also reflected on the final and the season. “Sporting were superior throughout the entire season, including the final. We made too many mistakes, and at this stage they are unforgivable,” he admitted.

Matz acknowledged Sporting’s long-term project and stability. “This is not just about this year. Sporting’s project started three years ago. They improved their team over time and were successful in finding players. They are more experienced and did not suffer injuries like we did.”

The Benfica coach also confirmed uncertainty about his future: “My contract ends now. We will sit down and talk. I want to work at strong clubs. My family is now Portuguese. I want to continue, but we must be rational and decide what is best for Benfica.”

Despite the disappointment, he concluded: “I am sad for not giving joy to Benfica’s fans.”
