Bayern officials criticise João Pinheiro: “It is, at the very least, surprising…”

Bayern Munich’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against PSG (6-5 on aggregate) continues to spark controversy, with the German club’s hierarchy openly questioning the performance of Portuguese referee João Pinheiro.

CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen questioned the appointment of the official for such a high-profile match. “It is, at the very least, surprising that a referee with only 15 Champions League appearances was appointed to oversee a game of this magnitude,” he said. He added, somewhat ironically, that João Pinheiro’s inexperience — despite being selected for the 2026 World Cup — “may explain some of the decisions made.”

Sporting director Max Eberl praised Bayern’s performance but pointed to key decisions that, in his view, influenced the outcome. “For me, there was a situation where a yellow card and therefore a red card could have been shown, but instead the foul was given in favour of PSG,” he said.

Eberl also expressed disbelief at the decision not to send off Nuno Mendes and instead award a foul to PSG in a controversial first-half incident. “That was a surprise for everyone,” he noted.

The German executive also commented on the handball appeal involving João Neves inside the PSG area, adding a touch of irony: “I suppose all journalists have called referees. Half say it’s a clear penalty, the other half say it was correctly judged. That’s what feels strange to me. What is the rule? So far, nobody has been able to explain it. In my view, it is handball.”

Despite the disappointment, Eberl emphasized Bayern’s pride in their campaign. “We can be proud of this team. They gave everything against what is probably the best team in Europe at the moment.”

He concluded: “We are extremely disappointed, but we recognize our performance. We learned something last year, and we must learn again this year to come back stronger next season.”
