Farioli joins elite list of managers to win Portuguese title in debut season

Francesco Farioli has entered Portuguese football history by becoming the 39th manager to win the national league in his first season at a club, after securing the title with FC Porto.

The Italian coach achieved the feat in his debut campaign in Portugal, guiding Porto to the championship and joining an exclusive group of managers who made an immediate impact in the country’s top flight.

The list of debut-season champions includes some of the most influential names in football history, with Bela Guttmann standing out as the only coach to achieve the milestone with two different Portuguese clubs, first with Porto and later with Benfica.

Over the decades, both FC Porto and Benfica have been central to this pattern, particularly during periods of dominance when coaching changes often brought immediate success. Foreign managers make up the majority of the list, highlighting the strong influence of international coaching in Portuguese football.

Other notable names include José Mourinho, Bobby Robson and Ruben Amorim, all of whom also made an immediate impact after arriving in Portugal.

Farioli’s achievement further reinforces FC Porto’s tradition of successful managerial appointments, becoming the 13th coach to win the league in his first season at the club.
