Braga Goalkeeper Hornicek Attracts Benfica and Porto Interest but €30M Price Pushes Him Abroad

SC Braga goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček has emerged as one of the most closely monitored talents in Portuguese football, with both SL Benfica and FC Porto tracking the Czech shot-stopper’s progress.

The 23-year-old has impressed with a series of outstanding performances in domestic competitions and in the Europa League, establishing himself as one of Braga’s key players. However, despite the interest from Portugal’s biggest clubs, any potential transfer within the league appears highly unlikely due to the financial demands set by Braga president António Salvador.

Horníček’s contract, signed in 2023 and valid until 2028, includes a €30 million release clause, and Braga are reportedly unwilling to negotiate below that figure. Such a valuation makes a domestic move extremely difficult and points instead toward a possible transfer abroad, where clubs possess greater financial power.

Benfica and Porto’s interest is also dependent on possible goalkeeper departures. Benfica could enter the market if Anatoliy Trubin leaves the club, while Porto may need a replacement should captain Diogo Costa secure a major transfer.

Braga’s firm stance is reinforced by the club’s current financial stability. The involvement of Qatar Sports Investments, which owns 29.6% of Braga’s SAD, combined with major recent sales such as Rodrigo Zalazar to Sporting and Roger Fernandes to Al-Ittihad Club, means the club are under no pressure to sell.

Horníček’s value could rise even further in the near future. The goalkeeper has already been included in Czech national team squads under coach Miroslav Koubek, and a possible appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup could significantly increase his international profile and market valuation.
