Bernardo Silva Rules Out Benfica Return This Summer but Admits Desire to Come Back One Day

Bernardo Silva has ruled out a return to SL Benfica this summer, although the Portuguese international admitted he still dreams of playing again for his boyhood club later in his career.

Speaking on the Portuguese television program Soltinhos Pelo Mundo on Canal 11, the midfielder addressed speculation surrounding his future as he approaches the end of his contract with Manchester City FC.

“I already told you I’m not going to Benfica,” Bernardo said when asked directly about a possible return to Portugal during the upcoming transfer window.

Despite dismissing the move for now, the 31-year-old made it clear that returning to Benfica remains one of his long-term ambitions.

“There is one thing that is certain: I want to come back. I don’t know if, when I want to return, the club will want me. But I do want to return,” he explained.

Bernardo also confirmed that there had been contact from Benfica to assess his willingness to return, but the player himself decided against the possibility at this stage of his career.

The midfielder emphasized that he wants his future fully resolved before joining Portugal’s national team preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I want to sort everything out between the end of the season and the start of training with the national team so I can have a clear mind, because the World Cup is too important for me to be thinking about other things,” he said.

With his Manchester City contract ending and several major European clubs reportedly interested including FC Barcelona and Juventus FC , Bernardo Silva is expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market this summer.
