Arsenal have reached the Champions League final for only the second time in their history after progressing from the semi-finals, but their overall record at this stage remains modest. The English club has been eliminated as many times as it has qualified for the final, with exits in 2009 and 2025, and successes in 2006 and 2026.
In contrast, Benfica boast one of the most impressive records in Champions League (formerly European Cup) semi-finals. The Portuguese side has reached this stage eight times and suffered defeat only once — in 1972 against Ajax, led by Johan Cruyff, who went on to win the competition. In the other seven appearances, Benfica progressed to the final, winning the trophy twice and finishing as runners-up on five occasions.
Despite Benfica’s remarkable seven wins in eight semi-final appearances, there are a few clubs with a perfect record at this stage, although none of them have reached more than two semi-finals.
Among the clubs with the most semi-final appearances, Real Madrid holds the strongest record, with 18 qualifications for the final and 15 eliminations. Barcelona has the weakest record among this group, having been eliminated 10 times in 17 attempts. Bayern Munich, currently playing their 22nd semi-final, will aim to maintain a positive record and secure a 12th appearance in the final against Paris Saint-Germain.
