Iván Fresneda set to start at left-back against Estrela da Amadora despite Sporting's search for reinforcement
Sporting have already decided who will replace Maxi Araújo for the opening round of the Primeira Liga against Estrela da Amadora on 8 August. Despite the club remaining active in the transfer market in search of a left-back, Iván Fresneda is expected to start on the left side of defence.
Maxi Araújo will miss the league opener through suspension, forcing head coach Rui Borges to find an alternative. According to reports, the 21-year-old Spanish full-back has emerged as the preferred solution, thanks to his steady development since arriving at Alvalade and the confidence he has earned from the coaching staff.
Although naturally a right-back, Fresneda is considered the strongest option for a temporary switch to the opposite flank. He is currently ahead of the other alternatives being assessed by Rui Borges.
One of those alternatives is Georgios Vagiannidis, another natural right-back. However, the Greek international was tested on the left side last season during Sporting's 3-0 defeat away to Bodø/Glimt, where he struggled to adapt to the role.
Further down the pecking order is Rodrigo Dias. The 21-year-old full-back has been training with the first team and remains highly regarded by Rui Borges, but a starting role in the league opener appears unlikely.
The situation could still change if Sporting complete the signing of a left-footed defender in the coming days. The club's hierarchy continue to prioritise strengthening the position to provide competition for Maxi Araújo and avoid relying on makeshift solutions.
Even so, Fresneda is expected to keep the edge, regardless of any late arrival, and is likely to be tested in the role during Friday's friendly against Nottingham Forest.
