Former FC Porto Double Champion Souza Begins Coaching Career at Brazil's Arouca Barra Clube

Former FC Porto midfielder Souza has been appointed as the head coach of Arouca Barra Clube, a fourth-division club based in Rio de Janeiro, marking the first managerial role of his career.

The 37-year-old retired from professional football last year after his spell with Vasco da Gama and now begins a new chapter on the sidelines. During his successful playing career, Souza won two Portuguese league titles with FC Porto, as well as the UEFA Europa League under André Villas-Boas, one Portuguese Cup and two Portuguese Super Cups.

Arouca Barra Clube, which had previously focused primarily on youth development, is now launching its senior team with Souza in charge. The Brazilian believes his experience as a player will help develop the club's next generation of talent.

"These young players could soon be representing clubs across Brazil and abroad. I want to use my football experience and leadership to help them grow and take the next step in their careers," Souza said after his appointment.

Despite sharing the same name, the Brazilian club has no professional connection with Portugal's FC Arouca. However, the two organizations are linked by history.

Arouca Barra Clube was founded by Portuguese immigrants, many of whom came from the municipality of Arouca in northern Portugal. The club's badge is based on the official coat of arms of Arouca, while its cultural roots remain deeply Portuguese, with a traditional folklore group and a clubhouse restaurant serving classic Portuguese dishes such as bacalhau à Brás, octopus and cozido à portuguesa.

Souza's appointment represents the beginning of an ambitious project focused on developing young talent while celebrating the club's unique Portuguese heritage in Brazil.
