Real Madrid Presidential Challenger Unveils Fernando Hierro as Key Figure in Reform Plan

Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has revealed a major addition to his proposed leadership team, securing the support of former club legend Fernando Hierro as part of his campaign to challenge current president Florentino Pérez.

According to Riquelme, Hierro would take charge of Real Madrid’s youth development structure at Valdebebas if he wins the club's presidential election. The former defender, currently serving as sporting director at Al Nassr, would oversee the academy and player development system, working alongside Raúl González, who has been selected as Riquelme’s choice for sporting director.

Speaking about the project, Riquelme emphasized the importance of placing an experienced and respected figure at the head of the club’s academy operations.

"The club needs someone who can truly lead Valdebebas and guide the development of young players. It must be someone who knows the club, is a legend, and has proven professional experience," he explained.

The candidate also highlighted Hierro’s international background and leadership credentials, arguing that the former Spain international is ideally suited to modernize the academy while restoring merit-based opportunities for young footballers.

A central pillar of Riquelme’s campaign is the promise to eliminate favoritism and increase transparency within the youth system. He has publicly stated his intention to ensure that player progression is based solely on performance and talent.

Fernando Hierro remains one of the most iconic figures in Real Madrid history. During his 14 seasons at the club, he won three UEFA Champions League titles, five La Liga championships, two Intercontinental Cups, and a UEFA Super Cup. Remarkably, the central defender scored 127 goals in 601 appearances, making him one of the most prolific defenders of his generation.

Following his retirement, Hierro built a successful career in football management and administration. He served as sporting director of the Spanish Football Federation during one of the most successful periods in Spain's history, later worked as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Real Madrid, managed Real Oviedo, and briefly coached the Spanish national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Most recently, Hierro has been working as sporting director at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he has overseen football operations during a period of significant international attention.

With the presidential race gradually gathering momentum, Riquelme hopes that the support of a respected figure such as Hierro will strengthen his vision for the future of Real Madrid and its academy system.
