The Aspen Institute has announced the appointment of Ángel Cabrera as its next President and Chief Executive Officer, marking the end of a highly successful chapter at Georgia Institute of Technology.
The Aspen Institute's Board of Trustees unanimously selected Cabrera to lead one of the world's most influential nonprofit organizations focused on leadership, dialogue, public policy, and addressing global challenges.
Since becoming Georgia Tech's 12th president in 2019, Cabrera has overseen a period of unprecedented growth and achievement. During his leadership, student enrollment increased by 55%, surpassing 56,000 students annually and helping establish Georgia Tech as one of the most sought-after public universities in the United States.
The institution also reached record levels in student applications, graduation rates, research funding, startup creation, invention disclosures, and philanthropic contributions.
Reflecting on his tenure, Cabrera described leading Georgia Tech as "the honor of a lifetime," expressing gratitude to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters who contributed to the university's success.
Working alongside more than 5,700 faculty and staff members, Cabrera launched the strategic initiative "Progress and Service for All," designed to expand educational opportunities, accelerate innovation, and strengthen Georgia Tech's impact both locally and globally.
Under his leadership, annual sponsored research awards exceeded $1.4 billion, helping Georgia Tech become the leading U.S. university without a medical school in research expenditures and the nation's second-largest recipient of federal research funding. The university further expanded its influence in key fields including artificial intelligence, neuroscience, space exploration, and entrepreneurship.
Georgia Tech also invested heavily in campus development and innovation ecosystems, advancing major projects such as Tech Square, Science Square, and the Creative Quarter initiative in Atlanta.
University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue praised Cabrera's leadership, highlighting not only the institution's measurable achievements but also his commitment to engaging with students, faculty, and the wider Georgia Tech community.
According to Perdue, Georgia Tech's annual economic impact on the state of Georgia grew to $5.8 billion under Cabrera's leadership, while federal research expenditures surpassed $1.2 billion, ranking the university second nationally.
Although Cabrera will soon begin his new role at the Aspen Institute, he plans to remain at Georgia Tech until November to ensure a smooth leadership transition. The University System of Georgia is expected to announce plans for selecting Georgia Tech's next president in the coming months.
Cabrera's move to the Aspen Institute represents a significant transition for both institutions, as one of higher education's most respected leaders takes on a broader role focused on fostering leadership, civic engagement, and solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges.
