Sporting identify Famalicão defender Ibrahima Ba as Diomande replacement target

Sporting are already shaping their squad for next season and have identified Ibrahima Ba as a priority target to strengthen the defence, especially in case Ousmane Diomande leaves during the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old Senegalese centre-back, currently playing for Famalicão, has impressed Sporting’s scouting department and coaching staff with his rapid development in the Portuguese league. Standing at 1.90m, Ba combines physical strength in aerial duels with surprising speed for his size, qualities that closely match Diomande’s profile.

Internally, Ba is seen as the “ideal clone” of Diomande, and Sporting scouts have followed his performances closely throughout the season. Under coach Hugo Oliveira, the young defender has already made 24 appearances and scored once, establishing himself as one of the league’s breakout talents.

Sporting’s plan, however, is dependent on Diomande’s future. The Ivorian defender is one of the most valuable assets in the squad and has attracted strong interest from top European clubs, particularly in England. Sporting are open to selling him for offers around €50 million, which would then finance a move for Ba.

Famalicão are known for tough negotiations and have set Ba’s valuation between €20 and €25 million. Sporting, however, hope to lower the fixed fee to around €15 million, complemented by performance-related bonuses.

The operation also reflects Sporting’s broader transfer strategy, with the club increasingly focused on the domestic market and early identification of talent with high potential. Previous successful dealings between the clubs, such as Pedro Gonçalves and Manuel Ugarte, reinforce the good relationship between Sporting and Famalicão.

Meanwhile, Sporting are also preparing changes in the full-back positions. Diogo Travassos is set to return from his loan spell at Moreirense and will be integrated into the squad, while uncertainty surrounds the futures of several other defenders, including Matheus Reis (Mangas) and Iván Fresneda.
