De Vrij open to Benfica move as free transfer opportunity emerges

Stefan de Vrij is one of the centre-backs being considered by Benfica for next season, with the Dutch international reportedly open to the possibility of joining the Lisbon club. According to reports from Italy, the 34-year-old defender is pleased with the idea of moving to the Estádio da Luz, a situation that has been confirmed by sources close to the player.

De Vrij’s contract with Inter Milan expires at the end of the season, and he will leave the club after seven years in Milan. Although renewal talks took place, Inter reportedly offered a reduced salary, leading to his departure. Several clubs have already shown interest in the defender, including Olympiakos, as well as teams from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Benfica are actively assessing options for central defence reinforcement, although no formal contact has yet been made with De Vrij. However, the club is aware that the player views a move to Portugal positively.

Another name on Benfica’s radar is 21-year-old Brazilian defender Viery from Grêmio, although his transfer would require an investment of around €20 million. Before making any defensive additions, Benfica are expected to wait for Nicolás Otamendi’s decision regarding his future, as the Argentine captain is also out of contract at the end of the season.
