Rui Borges: “We Were Not Capable”

Rui Borges admitted responsibility after Sporting CP suffered a 2-1 defeat in the Portuguese Cup final, ending the season without silverware. Speaking after the match, the coach acknowledged that his side failed to deal with the opponent’s strengths, particularly from set-pieces and counter-attacks. Borges said Sporting lacked intensity in attack, missed important chances, and gradually lost confidence during the game.

Reflecting on the season, the manager stressed that a club like Sporting must compete for trophies and admitted the campaign could not be considered fully positive despite the team’s quality throughout the league season. He also thanked supporters for their backing and promised that the club would analyse its weaknesses, improve in the transfer market, and return stronger next season.

Borges also downplayed Sporting’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League league phase, insisting that the disappointment of losing the Portuguese Cup remained the dominant feeling within the squad.
