Portugal delivered an outstanding performance on the opening day of the World Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, setting three national records and securing qualification in multiple events.
The women’s 4x100m relay team , Lorene Bazolo, Tatjana Pinto, Beatriz Castelhano, and Arialis Gandulla, clocked 43.11 seconds, breaking the previous national record and booking a place in Sunday’s final, as well as qualifying for the 2027 World Championships.
In the men’s 4x400m relay, Pedro Afonso, Ericsson Tavares, João Coelho, and Omar Elkhatib also impressed. Their time of 2:59.01 set a new national benchmark and earned them both a spot in the final and qualification for the next World Championships.
Portugal’s mixed 4x100m relay team, David Landim, Lorene Bazolo, Delvis Santos, and Arialis Gandulla, added to the success by setting another national record with 41.45 seconds. Their performance advanced them to the next round, where they will compete for a place in the final and another qualification spot.
The day also featured global highlights, with two world records in the mixed 4x100m event. Jamaica set a new mark of 39.99 seconds, surpassing Canada’s earlier time of 40.07 seconds set just moments before.
