Portugal national team coach Roberto Martínez explained his squad selection decisions after announcing the 27-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, particularly addressing the omissions of António Silva and Paulinho.
“For us, it is a sad day because we have to leave out players we would really like to take. But on the other hand, it is also an exciting day because we are about to fight against history. Quoting Pedro Abrunhosa, to achieve what has never been done,” Martínez said.
The Portuguese coach stressed that every player involved in the qualification campaign and the UEFA Nations League triumph remains part of the group, even if some were ultimately left out. Regarding António Silva’s absence, Martínez explained that the coaching staff opted for Tomás Araújo among the five centre-backs available.
Discussing the attacking options, Martínez revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonçalo Ramos are the team’s two traditional strikers, while Gonçalo Guedes was selected for his tactical flexibility and ability to play in multiple attacking roles. Although Paulinho fits the profile of a classic striker, the coach preferred a more versatile option for the tournament.
Martínez also shared his ambitions for the World Cup, promising commitment, pride and determination from his squad. He acknowledged Portugal’s difficult history in the competition but insisted the team is fully prepared to compete and give everything for the country.
