Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez explained his decision to include four goalkeepers in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting Ricardo Velho’s attitude and commitment to the national team.
Speaking after announcing the squad, Martínez said several factors influenced the final selection, including the tournament’s complexity, climate conditions and time zone differences. He also emphasized the importance of versatility within the squad, mentioning players such as Diogo Dalot, Matheus Nunes and João Cancelo.
The coach admitted that talented players like Ricardo Horta, Pedro Gonçalves and Rodrigo Mora missed out because Portugal already has several attacking midfielders and wide players available, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Francisco Trincão, Pedro Neto, Francisco Conceição, Rafael Leão and Gonçalo Guedes.
Regarding the goalkeeping situation, Martínez revealed he personally spoke with Ricardo Velho to explain his role as the fourth-choice goalkeeper. Although Velho will not be eligible to sit on the bench unless there is an injury replacement, the player immediately accepted the situation.
“In two minutes, he told me he would help the national team in any way necessary,” Martínez said, praising the goalkeeper’s professionalism and team spirit.
