Several artists pull out of Trump-linked Freedom 250 celebration
Country singer Martina McBride has withdrawn from performing at the upcoming Great American State Fair following online criticism and controversy surrounding the event’s political associations.
The announcement comes after growing backlash directed at multiple artists who were originally scheduled to appear at the high-profile national celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Event tied to Freedom 250 initiative
The Great American State Fair is part of a large-scale national exposition planned for Washington, D.C., running from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall.
The event is being organized under Freedom 250, a group described as non-partisan but launched with involvement from President Donald Trump to coordinate celebrations for the country’s semiquincentennial.
The program was initially promoted as a World’s Fair-style festival featuring live music, cultural exhibitions, state showcases, and patriotic programming.
Growing controversy over political ties
Despite its non-partisan branding, the project has faced criticism due to perceived political connections, prompting debate among artists and the public.
Several performers announced their withdrawal shortly after the initial lineup was revealed, including Morris Day and The Time, Young MC, and The Commodores. Some cited concerns that they were not fully informed about the political context surrounding the event.
Young MC stated that he expected a non-political celebration and did not anticipate the level of controversy surrounding the festival’s backing and branding.
McBride says she was “misled”
McBride addressed her decision on social media, stating that she agreed to participate under the impression that the event was non-partisan.
She explained that she had asked multiple questions before signing on and was assured the celebration would not be politically affiliated. Following the backlash, she ultimately chose to step away from the performance.
Lineup uncertainty continues
With multiple high-profile withdrawals, the final lineup for the Great American State Fair remains uncertain. Organizers have not yet issued a full revised list of performers following the wave of cancellations.
