New title introduces “Ballistic Authority” system focused on realistic gunplay
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been officially announced, with Infinity Ward revealing the first details of its multiplayer experience, which the studio says will prioritise realism, competitive balance and precise weapon control.
The game is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo’s next-generation Switch 2.
“Ballistic Authority” aims to redefine shooting mechanics
The headline feature of the new multiplayer is a system called Ballistic Authority, described by Infinity Ward as a core technology designed to deliver “the most authentic gunplay in Modern Warfare history”.
The system integrates weapon handling, aiming precision, audio feedback, visibility improvements and combat awareness into a unified gameplay model.
According to the developer, the goal is to eliminate randomness in gunfights, with a design philosophy of “no bloom, no guesswork and no uncertainty”.
One of the key changes is the complete removal of bullet spread (bloom) when firing without aiming down sights. Instead, shots will now align directly with the player’s aim point, making gunfights more consistent and predictable.
Movement redesigned for fluid but realistic combat
Movement mechanics have also been reworked to feel more grounded while preserving responsiveness. Infinity Ward says players will retain the ability to reposition quickly, contest angles and react under pressure without losing full control of their character.
The studio emphasised that the new system is intended to balance realism with fast-paced decision-making in combat scenarios.
Multiplayer maps and modes at launch
At release, Modern Warfare 4 will include 12 brand-new 6v6 multiplayer maps set across various global locations.
These maps are designed to support different playstyles, ranging from close-quarters engagements to more open tactical combat environments.
Additional content will include dedicated Gunfight maps, large-scale battles in a new Big War mode featuring infantry and vehicles, and a new mode called Kill Block.
Kill Block is described as a dynamic battlefield system featuring over 500 configurations that can alter routes, cover placement and sightlines between matches.
New customization and weapon systems
A redesigned loadout system will introduce a new assistant called Gunny, which helps players quickly build weapon setups based on playstyle and unlocked attachments. Players will also be able to share weapon builds with others.
The Gunsmith system is being expanded, alongside a unified loadout structure and a larger selection of weapons, killstreaks and equipment available from launch.
Players who fully level their weapons will unlock Apex Attachments, special upgrades that add new tactical functions and behaviours to weapons.
Prestige system returns
Infinity Ward also confirmed the return of the Classic Prestige system, alongside a second progression path called Regular Prestige.
Classic Prestige will function similarly to older Call of Duty titles, resetting Create-a-Class progression in exchange for accelerated XP gains and exclusive rewards.
