Goalkeeper’s Late Own Goal Sparks Fury and Match-Fixing Accusations in Panama

A dramatic and controversial ending in Panama has ignited a major dispute after an own goal by José Calderón handed victory to Alianza FC over Sporting San Miguelito.

With the match tied 2-2 in the 90th minute, Calderón inexplicably put the ball into his own net, sealing a 3-2 defeat for his team. The incident immediately triggered outrage, with teammate Gustavo Herrera publicly accusing the goalkeeper of deliberate wrongdoing.

Taking to social media, Herrera did not hold back: he labeled Calderón a “manipulator” and suggested match-fixing, claiming such actions tarnish the sport and undermine players striving for honest careers.

Calderón responded by admitting responsibility for the mistake but firmly denied any misconduct. He described the moment as an “unfortunate play” and issued an apology to teammates, staff, and fans, while also warning of legal action against accusations he considers false and damaging to his reputation.

The Liga Panameña de Fútbol has since opened a formal investigation into the incident, stating that the situation could compromise the integrity of the competition and promising a thorough inquiry.
