Cruzeiro, coached by Portuguese manager Artur Jorge, drew 0-0 away to Universidad Católica in Santiago de Chile in a Copa Libertadores group stage match.
The Brazilian side were reduced to 10 men early in the second half after Keny Arroyo was shown a straight red card in the 48th minute. After the match, Artur Jorge criticised the decision, arguing it was too harsh. “It worries me when there is a lack of consistency. It seems to me a foul, but an exaggerated punishment,” he said. “I’ve seen much more aggressive moments in other games without consequences. Against us, it happened.”
Despite the setback, Cruzeiro remain top of Group D with seven points, level with Universidad Católica.
In the Copa Sudamericana, Portuguese coach Franclim Carvalho led Botafogo to a 2-1 home victory over Racing Club. The Brazilian side took the lead through an own goal by Marco Di Cesare (19’), conceded an equaliser by Maravilla MartÃnez (46’), but secured the win thanks to Danilo (74’) at the Estádio Nilton Santos. Botafogo now lead Group E with 10 points.
Vasco da Gama, with Nuno Moreira in the starting XI, also earned a 2-1 away win against Audax Italiano. After falling behind due to an early own goal by Alan Saldivia (5’), Claudio Spinelli equalised from the penalty spot (64’), before Matheus França completed the turnaround (71’) after an assist from Nuno Moreira. Vasco now share the top of Group G with Olimpia, both on seven points.
