With just days to go before the start of Moçambola 2026, urgent efforts are underway to prevent a potential referees’ boycott that could disrupt the opening round of the national championship.
The Club Commission and the National Football Referees Committee (CNAF) are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday afternoon, 30 April, at the headquarters of the Mozambican Football Federation. The objective is to resolve the ongoing dispute over unpaid debts owed to match officials.
The meeting was requested by the Club Commission, which brings together the 14 club presidents participating in the league. The move follows repeated warnings from referees that they will refuse to officiate matches if outstanding payments from the previous season are not settled.
At the centre of the dispute is an estimated debt of around six million meticais, linked to services provided by elite referees during the second half of the 2025 season. The officials are also demanding a shift to a per-match payment system to prevent the accumulation of arrears, which they say has been a recurring issue in recent seasons.
Despite the urgency, CNAF has yet to announce the referees for the opening fixtures, just 48 hours before kickoff. The first match of the season is scheduled for 2 May in Maxixe, where Associação Desportiva de Vilankulo will face Ferroviário de Lichinga.
