Eagles survive late scare to take advantage in rollercoaster playoff clash
Benfica started their Campeonato Nacional semi-final series with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over OC Barcelos at the Pavilhão da Luz, but were made to suffer despite building a strong first-half lead.
Edu Castro’s side controlled the opening period and went into half-time firmly in command after two well-taken goals.
Strong first half gives Benfica control
The home team opened the scoring early, with Pau Bargalló striking in the 6th minute after a precise assist from Nil Roca.
Benfica doubled their advantage in the 15th minute through Viti, who unleashed a powerful long-range shot that left the Barcelos goalkeeper with no chance, sending the Eagles into the break 2-0 up.
Chaos and momentum shift in the second half
The second half, however, brought a completely different story, filled with intensity, discipline issues and momentum swings.
OC Barcelos capitalised on Benfica’s setbacks after Nil Roca received two blue cards, reducing the home side’s control of the match. Carlos Ramos pulled one back in the 29th minute, reigniting the contest.
The game then became increasingly chaotic, with chances at both ends. João Rodrigues missed a penalty for Benfica, while Luís Querido was shown a red card for Barcelos, further adding to the drama.
Just moments later, Carlos Ramos struck again to level the score at 2-2 in the 35th minute.
Immediate response secures Benfica victory
Benfica reacted instantly to regain control of the tie. In the same minute as the equaliser, Gonçalo Pinto set up Nil Roca, who made amends for his earlier dismissal with a decisive finish to restore the lead at 3-2.
The closing stages remained tense, with Zé Miranda missing both a penalty and a direct free shot for Barcelos, but Benfica held firm to secure a crucial first-leg advantage.
All to play for in second leg
The two sides will meet again on Sunday, with Benfica carrying a narrow advantage into what promises to be another highly competitive encounter.
