Francisco Geraldes, a former Sporting midfielder now playing for Seoul E-Land, has criticized Sporting’s players for their passive reaction during a key moment in their 2–1 derby loss to Benfica.
Taking to social media, Geraldes highlighted the difference in attitude between the two teams during penalty situations in the first half. He pointed out that when Luis Suárez missed his penalty, no Sporting player was ready to react to a possible rebound.
“There’s always a chance a penalty is missed and a rebound occurs, but none of the Sporting players were prepared. There were seven Benfica players ready for the second ball, compared to just one from Sporting, who wasn’t even well positioned,” he noted.
Geraldes downplayed any controversy over Benfica players entering the box early, saying the real issue was Sporting’s lack of awareness and reaction. He questioned whether it came down to determination, overconfidence, or even fatigue.
He also observed a similar situation during Benfica’s converted penalty, where multiple Benfica players were again in position to capitalize on a rebound if needed.
