Sporting CP could be in line for another significant financial boost this summer as interest in midfielder Mateus Fernandes continues to grow across the Premier League.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has emerged as one of the most sought-after young talents in England, with reports suggesting that West Ham are prepared to sell the player if their valuation of around €88 million is met. Among the clubs linked with a potential move is Liverpool, which is reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
While the transfer speculation focuses on Fernandes and his current club, Sporting are also keeping a close eye on developments. Thanks to FIFA's solidarity mechanism, the Portuguese champions remain entitled to receive a percentage of any future transfer fee involving the player.
Mateus Fernandes joined Sporting's academy in 2016 at the age of 12 and remained at the club until 2024. During that period, he developed through the youth ranks before eventually earning his move to English football.
Sporting initially sold the midfielder to Southampton in a deal worth €15 million, with an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses. The agreement also included a clause granting Sporting 10% of any future capital gain generated by a subsequent transfer.
That clause already proved highly profitable when Southampton sold Fernandes to West Ham for €44 million. Sporting reportedly received approximately €4.25 million from that transaction.
Now, another lucrative payment could be on the horizon. Because Fernandes spent the majority of his formative years at Sporting's academy, the club is entitled to a share of future transfer fees through FIFA's solidarity mechanism.
Should a transfer worth €88 million materialize, Sporting could receive around €3.08 million from the solidarity payment alone. The amount reflects the years Fernandes spent developing at the club between the ages of 12 and 20.
The potential windfall would represent another example of Sporting's successful academy model, which continues to generate both elite football talent and substantial financial returns. As Premier League interest intensifies, the Lisbon club may once again benefit from the rise of one of its former academy stars.
With Liverpool and other top clubs reportedly monitoring the midfielder's progress, the coming weeks could prove decisive for both Mateus Fernandes and Sporting's financial outlook.
