Generation Z Could Revive Movie Theaters

Young people aged 14 to 29 are driving box office growth, boosting theater attendance, and shaping the future of the film industry.

Contrary to concerns that streaming services would pull young audiences away from cinemas, Generation Z has emerged as a key force behind box office success. In 2025, Gen Z moviegoers watched an average of seven films in theaters, outperforming older generations and accounting for nearly 40% of all movie audiences in North America.

This trend is driven by a mix of affordable entertainment, loyalty programs, social experiences, and a desire to be part of major cultural moments. For many young people, going to the movies is about more than watching a film—it is an opportunity to spend time with friends and join conversations happening online.

Gen Z is also influencing the types of films that succeed at the box office, showing strong interest in horror movies, anime, video game adaptations, and re-releases of classic titles. Films based on popular gaming franchises and established brands continue to attract large numbers of young viewers.

Industry experts believe that if theaters continue offering engaging and affordable experiences, Generation Z could play a crucial role in revitalizing moviegoing and supporting the long-term future of the cinema industry.
