Portugal ended a 23-year wait to lift the prestigious Maurice Revello Tournament, formerly known as the Toulon Tournament, and one player stood above the rest: Benfica midfielder João Rego.
The 20-year-old playmaker played a decisive role in Portugal's triumph, finishing the competition as both the Best Player and the Top Scorer with five goals. Wearing the iconic number 10 shirt, Rego delivered performances that inevitably sparked comparisons with former Benfica legend Rui Costa.
The comparison is more than symbolic. Back in 1992, Rui Costa also represented Portugal in the tournament wearing the number 10 jersey. The current Benfica president was named the competition's Best Player and Top Scorer after scoring four goals, helping Portugal secure one of the most memorable youth titles in its history.
That successful 1992 generation included notable names such as Abel Xavier, Hélder Cristóvão, Jorge Costa and Bino, but Rui Costa emerged as the standout figure. At the time, he had already established himself in the Benfica first team, recording 32 appearances, four goals and eight assists during the 1992/93 season.
João Rego now finds himself at a different stage of his career. Although he is part of Benfica's senior squad, his immediate future remains uncertain. The talented midfielder is expected to report back to Benfica's training center in Seixal on June 25, where he will be assessed by new head coach Marco Silva.
Several possibilities remain on the table, including a loan move or a permanent transfer, but Benfica continues to show faith in the youngster's potential. Earlier this year, Rego signed a contract extension until 2030, with the club inserting a €100 million release clause.
The parallels between Rego and Rui Costa have not gone unnoticed. In both 1992 and 2026, Portugal's standout performer at the Toulon Tournament wore the number 10 shirt and represented Benfica. While Rui Costa now leads the club from the boardroom, João Rego is hoping to follow a similar path on the pitch and establish himself as one of Portugal's brightest football talents.
