Despite the defeat, Sporting produced one of the finest performances in Portuguese handball history, battling until the final seconds against one of Europe’s strongest teams.
The match began at a frantic pace, with Aalborg goalkeeper Niklas Landin immediately making his presence felt by producing three consecutive saves. Sporting, however, responded through the brilliance of Kiko Costa, who led the attack with a superb individual display while engaging in a scoring duel with Thomas Arnoldsen.
After 15 minutes, Sporting led 8-6 thanks to a goal from Martim Costa, but Aalborg’s fast transitions prevented the Portuguese champions from building a comfortable advantage.
The game remained balanced throughout the first half. Despite suspensions for players such as Gassama and Moga, and Landin reaching halftime with 12 saves and a 41% save percentage, Sporting stayed fully in contention. Right before the break, Ricardo Costa called a tactical timeout, leading to a brilliant move finished by Salvador Salvador, although the goal was ultimately disallowed. Sporting went into halftime trailing by one goal and facing a numerical disadvantage for the start of the second half.
The Danish side quickly extended their lead after the restart, taking advantage of Sporting’s strategy of playing without a goalkeeper, with Landin even scoring into an empty net to make it 20-17 — the largest gap of the game.
Sporting refused to surrender. Mohamed Aly made key saves from seven-meter throws, while Kiko Costa continued to carry the team offensively. By the 45th minute, Aalborg’s lead had been reduced to a single goal at 29-28.
However, a few technical mistakes and missed opportunities in crucial moments allowed Aalborg to pull away again to 32-29. Kiko Costa finished with an outstanding 13 goals, while Martim Costa added eight more in a heroic effort to keep Sporting alive.
In the closing seconds, Thorkelsson finally beat Landin to make it 37-36, but there was no time left for a final comeback.
Sporting’s European dream ended there, but the Portuguese side left Denmark with enormous pride, proving they can compete with Europe’s elite until the very last second.
