Rare Moment: North and South Korea Set to Meet in Women’s Champions Clash

In a rare sporting moment, a women’s team from North Korea will travel to South Korea to play a semi-final match in the AFC Women’s Champions League. It marks the first time since 2018 that North Korean athletes have crossed the border for competition.

The match, scheduled for May 20, will see Naegohyang face Suwon in a highly symbolic encounter. The South Korean Ministry of Unification confirmed the visit, with Pyongyang sending a delegation of 27 players and 12 staff members.

Sporting exchanges between the two nations remain extremely rare, as they are technically still at war since the end of the Korean War, which concluded without a formal peace treaty.

The last notable interaction came during the 2018 Winter Olympics, where the two Koreas formed a unified women’s ice hockey team. Since then, such moments have been scarce, making this upcoming clash particularly significant.

Naegohyang secured their semi-final spot with a 3-0 win over Ho Chi Minh City, and the winner will face either Melbourne City or Tokyo Verdy in the final, set to take place in Suwon on May 23.
