Nélson Oliveira extends record in Grand Tours

Portuguese rider joins Movistar lineup for the Giro, reinforcing his status as the nation’s most experienced Grand Tour cyclist

Nélson Oliveira continues to build on his remarkable career by increasing his record number of appearances in cycling’s Grand Tours. At 37, the Portuguese rider is set to compete once again in the Giro d'Italia, marking his 23rd participation in one of the sport’s three major races.

Riding for the Movistar Team, Oliveira is expected to play a key supporting role for Enric Mas, who will be making his debut in the Italian race. His experience will be crucial in managing race dynamics and providing tactical support during decisive moments.

This will be Oliveira’s fourth appearance at the Giro, having previously competed in 2012 and 2013, and now returning after several years. Over the course of his career, he has also taken part in the Tour nine times and the Vuelta ten times, further cementing his position as Portugal’s record holder in Grand Tour participations.

The Movistar squad for this edition also includes riders such as Javier Romo, Iván García Cortina, Juan Pedro López, Einer Rubio, Orluis Aular, and Lorenzo Milesi, forming a well-rounded team for the demanding race.

This year’s Giro begins in Nessebar, Bulgaria, and concludes on May 31 in Rome, promising another challenging and exciting edition of the iconic event.
