Gençlerbirliği banned from registering players due to unpaid transfer-related fees
Farense are still waiting for payment related to Ricardo Velho’s loan spell at Gençlerbirliği, and the dispute has now led to serious consequences for the Turkish club.
FIFA has imposed a transfer registration ban on Gençlerbirliği after the club failed to settle outstanding financial obligations owed to the Portuguese side.
FIFA confirms registration ban
In an official communication sent to all parties, world football’s governing body stated that Gençlerbirliği “has not yet fulfilled its financial obligations towards Farense”, which has resulted in an immediate ban on registering new players.
The sanction will remain in place until the outstanding debt is fully paid and could extend for up to three consecutive transfer windows.
FIFA has also requested that the Turkish Football Federation enforce the ban domestically.
€200,000 debt at the centre of dispute
The case involves approximately €200,000 owed to Farense from Ricardo Velho’s loan agreement.
Gençlerbirliği had previously indicated interest in activating a permanent transfer for the Portuguese goalkeeper, but the financial obligations related to the loan were never settled.
Under the original agreement, the Turkish club held a €3.5 million option to purchase 70% of the player’s rights.
In addition, Farense would be entitled to a further €3.5 million should Gençlerbirliği sell the Portuguese international before the end of 2027.
Growing financial pressure on Turkish club
Gençlerbirliği’s failure to comply with payment terms has escalated the situation, triggering FIFA intervention and a potentially lengthy transfer ban that could significantly impact the club’s sporting planning.
For Farense, the ruling represents an important enforcement of contractual rights, although the Portuguese club continues to await the recovery of the outstanding amount.
