Portugal U19 Held by Kazakhstan in Disappointing Euro 2027 Qualifying Opener

Portugal's Under-19 national team endured a frustrating start to their UEFA European Under-19 Championship 2027 qualifying campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kazakhstan in Greece.

The match, played at the Kaftanzoglio Stadium in Thessaloniki, offered few moments of quality and remained largely uneventful for long periods. Both sides struggled to create clear scoring opportunities, leaving supporters waiting until the closing stages for the decisive moments.

Portugal appeared to have secured a valuable opening victory when substitute Eduardo Ferreira found the net in the 81st minute. The FC Porto forward made an immediate impact, scoring just four minutes after entering the field.

The move began with excellent hold-up play from Anísio Cabral near midfield before Mateus Mide delivered the final pass. Ferreira then finished confidently to put Portugal ahead and seemingly on course for all three points.

However, the advantage proved short-lived. As the Portuguese side looked set to celebrate a winning start, a defensive lapse allowed Kazakhstan back into the match. Aldiyar Nurgali capitalized on the opportunity and produced an impressive finish to level the score in the closing minutes.

The late equalizer leaves Portugal facing a more challenging path in the qualification group. Head coach Bino and his players will now need strong performances against tougher opposition to keep their hopes of progressing firmly alive.

Portugal's next test comes against host nation Greece on Saturday, followed by a crucial encounter with Serbia on Tuesday. Both matches are expected to provide a sterner challenge and could prove decisive in determining the final standings of the group.

While the draw is far from the result Portugal wanted, the team still has opportunities to recover and demonstrate the quality that has traditionally made the country one of Europe's strongest producers of young football talent.
