Two of the most exclusive superyacht berths on the French Riviera have been placed on the market after becoming surplus to a high-profile hydrogen-powered yacht project once associated with Bill Gates.
Located at Port Vauban, the berths occupy a prime position on the famous Billionaires’ Quay, one of the most sought-after docking locations in the Mediterranean. The facilities were originally secured to accommodate a custom-built superyacht operation consisting of the hydrogen-powered yacht Breakthrough and its support vessel Wayfinder.
The project was notable not only for the vessels themselves but also for the extensive marina upgrades required to support hydrogen-powered maritime technology. Infrastructure improvements included expanded docking facilities, enhanced access routes, and specialized systems capable of handling liquid hydrogen fuel.
Port Vauban later became the first marina in the world able to supply liquid hydrogen to a superyacht, marking a significant milestone in the development of alternative marine propulsion technologies. The achievement highlighted growing interest in cleaner energy solutions within the luxury yacht industry.
Despite the ambitious vision, the yacht program changed direction after Breakthrough was sold before entering private use by Gates. The vessel was subsequently acquired by Canadian entrepreneur Patrick Dovigi, while Wayfinder was also sold separately.
The sale of the berths now offers prospective buyers a rare opportunity to secure long-term docking rights in one of Europe's most prestigious yacht destinations. Large-vessel berths in the region remain extremely limited, making such opportunities highly sought after among yacht owners and charter operators.
Beyond their prime location between Monaco and Saint-Tropez, the berths provide access to high-security facilities, concierge services, maintenance support, and infrastructure designed for some of the world's largest private yachts.
