FC Porto Part Ways With Handball Coach Magnus Andersson After Trophy-Less Spell

FC Porto have officially confirmed the departure of handball coach Magnus Andersson, bringing an end to the Swedish manager’s second spell in charge of the club.

The 60-year-old leaves as one of the most successful coaches in FC Porto handball history, having guided the team to four Portuguese league titles, two Portuguese Cups, and two Super Cups during his time with the Dragons. He also played a significant role in raising the club’s profile on the European stage through memorable campaigns in the EHF Champions League and the EHF European League.

Despite his achievements, Andersson was unable to add more silverware during his most recent two-year stint at the club. FC Porto struggled to break Sporting’s dominance in Portuguese handball, finishing the last two seasons without winning a major trophy.

In a statement published on the club’s official channels, FC Porto thanked the coach for his contribution and wished him success in the next chapter of his career.

“FC Porto wishes Magnus Andersson the very best for his personal and professional future,” the club stated.

Across both spells in charge, Andersson managed FC Porto in 342 matches, recording 257 victories, 19 draws, and 66 defeats. His impressive record reflects the impact he had on the development of the team and the club’s growth as a competitive force in European handball.

Reports suggest that Andersson’s next destination could be the Norway national team. If confirmed, it would mark another important step in his international coaching career.

The experienced coach previously served as head coach of the Austria national team between 2010 and 2011 and also worked with Sweden’s Under-21 national team as an assistant coach from 2011 to 2013.

As FC Porto begin the search for a new leader, the club faces the challenge of rebuilding a squad capable of reclaiming domestic titles and competing strongly in European competitions. Meanwhile, Andersson departs with a legacy that includes some of the most successful years in the history of FC Porto handball.
