YouTube Introduces Clearer AI Labels for Realistic Videos

Platform updates policies to improve transparency as AI-generated content spreads rapidly across social media.

YouTube is rolling out new measures to make it easier for viewers to identify when realistic-looking videos have been created or altered using artificial intelligence. The update comes amid a surge of AI-generated content across online platforms, including videos, images, and music.

Under the new policy, Alphabet-owned YouTube will display more prominent disclosure labels on AI-assisted content. For long-form videos, the label will appear directly below the video player, just above the description. For short-form content, such as clips and Shorts, the label will be shown as an overlay on the video itself, making the disclosure immediately visible.

The company already requires creators to indicate when they use AI tools to produce realistic content, but the new system strengthens enforcement and visibility. YouTube is also developing automated tools to detect AI-generated material and apply labels when creators fail to disclose it.

According to YouTube, the goal is to improve transparency while still preserving creator flexibility. The platform also confirmed that labeling a video as AI-generated will not affect its recommendations or monetization eligibility.

Other major platforms are adopting similar measures. Spotify, for example, recently introduced a “Verified by Spotify” badge to identify AI-generated music, aiming to give users clearer information about how content is produced.

As AI-generated media becomes increasingly indistinguishable from real footage, platforms are under growing pressure to ensure users can quickly tell what is authentic and what is artificially created.
