McDonald’s Phasing Out Self-Serve Soda Fountains Nationwide

McDonald’s is quietly ending its era of self-serve soda fountains across U.S. locations, marking a major shift in the fast-food giant’s dining experience. The company aims to complete the transition by 2032, gradually rolling out changes as restaurants are remodeled or updated.

The change is part of McDonald’s broader effort to modernize its restaurants and adapt to evolving consumer habits that favor takeout, delivery, and drive-thru over in-store dining. It also reduces labor and maintenance costs associated with self-serve machines while giving the company greater control over portions, cleanliness, and inventory.

Many locations already serve beverages behind the counter, replacing traditional self-service stations. Customers may lose the convenience of easy refills and custom drink mixes, but McDonald’s is expanding its beverage offerings with new Refreshers and crafted sodas, reflecting shifting consumer tastes beyond traditional soft drinks and coffee.

In a statement to FOX Business, McDonald’s said: "Our fans’ love for McDonald’s beverages runs deep… Next month, we’re building on that passion with a new era of beverages, featuring a variety of Refreshers and crafted sodas rolling out nationwide." The company has not yet provided additional details about the phase-out timeline for the fountain machines.

The move mirrors a broader fast-food industry trend prioritizing speed, digital ordering, and efficiency over traditional dine-in experiences, as chains adapt to post-pandemic consumer behavior and modern technology.
